In order to replace damaged roof shingles you need to remove the damaged shingle install the new one and seal the edges.

Then pull out the damaged shingle.
This task can be accomplished in a few hours using tools you should have around the house.
Line up a piece of drip edge flashing horizontally along the edge of the roof.
Each shingle is typically secured by eight nails.
Overlap each row at least 3 to 4 inches.
The first step obviously requires the removal of the nails holding that shingle to the roof deck.
Working your way up the roof expose all of the rotted wood.
Lift courses or shingles from the asphalt adhesive strip on the course beneath.
Nail a horizontal row of shingles over the drip edge.
To access the nails the shingle will need to be lifted but it is likely bonded to the shingle below by the shingles asphalt sealant spots.
The shingles should jut out from 1 4 to 3 8 inch 7 to 1 cm over the drip edge.
Finding the damage to locate rotted areas of the roof s edge gently lift up shingles with a pry bar or taping knife.
Leave the next course of shingles intact by carefully removing the second set of four nails.
If you don t have a hook blade knife don t try to do the job with a small saw or a pair of clippers.

Nail the center row first then the center row of the course above it nailing 1 2 in.

Pull up the felt paper underneath the shingles.
Use the claw of a hammer to loosen the adhesive under the tabs 2 rows above the damaged shingles and then loosen any exposed nails with the claw.
The edge that curves out should be hanging over the edge with the flat edge resting on top.
Although this sealant bond is quite strong strong enough for the shingles to resist wind uplift it can be broken by sliding a flat pry bar carefully under the target shingle s edge.
Install new flashing metal.
Slide the new shingle up into place.
Asphalt roof shingles can become brittle in cold weather so wait until a warm but not hot day to remove and replace eave stripping.
Hammer the nail into the top part of each shingle.
When re shingling the edge of your roof you ll want to apply the new shingles and then trim them back to avoid waste or poor guessing.
After removing the center row of nails on the damaged shingle lift the undamaged shingles above it and remove the next row of nails.
The drip edge is often replaced when new shingles are installed but it can be replaced at any time.
