Injection Molding Rubber Compounds

Based off of a process intended for the molding of plastics injection molding of rubber began in the mid 1960s. The rubber injection molding process works by significantly heating the rubber and using a very high pressure to inject the rubber compound in to the mold. For automotive production the preferred method of molding is by injection. Injection molding of rubber was originally an offshoot from the plastics industry in the early 1960s.

Hcr silicone processing poses unique challenges when compared with organic polymer based rubber compounds. And injection molding experiments where the basic characterization of rubb er compounds allowed the pr ediction of the pressure developm ent during molding and the state of cure in molded rubber. Starting with the right rubber compound natural or synthetic rubbers elastomers are compounded with additives to meet design use specifications and or ease of processing. Rubber injection molding is used to develop both solid rubber parts and rubber to metal bonded products.

High consistency rubber hcr silicone injection molding requires special considerations to manufacture quality parts the selection of the press mold design and gate design are integral to success. It is then injected into the mold and travels through a system of runners and sprues before entering the mold cavities through one or more gates. The product is released by opening the mold and closing it again to receive the next injection. Once filled the rubber is heated within the mold to complete its cure cycle.

These compounds are used frequently to seal in brake systems and for sealing hot water and steam. Natural and synthetic rubber compounds can provide a wide variety of properties that solve problems from seals or gaskets noise and vibration isolation abrasion and impact resistance and chemical corrosion resistance. Epdm rubber compounds have good resistance to mild acids detergents alkalis silicone oils and greases ketones and alcohols. Rubber injection molding successfully alters the plastics process by heating the rubber and placing it under significantly more pressure per square inch of cavity surface in molding.

For injection molding the rubber compound is heated to a low viscous and flowing state. The rubber molding operation brings together all three elements of the process mentioned above and so is the most critical point in the process.
